Margaret felt a wave of anger and disbelief.
All those evenings she had waited for him, all the explanations about work, and now this?
Her mind immediately began racing.
Who was the woman on the phone?
How long had this been happening?
Was Daniel really planning to celebrate her departure?
She could barely contain herself.
The Mysterious Message on the Note
Daniel picked up his keys and headed toward the bedroom door.
Margaret remained frozen beneath the bed, waiting until she heard the front door close.
Then silence returned.
Slowly, she crawled out from her hiding place.
Her face was hot with anger, and tears were beginning to gather in her eyes.
She had expected to discover whether her husband cared about her.
Instead, she believed she had uncovered something much worse.
She looked at the note on the dresser.
Daniel had written something beneath her original message.
Margaret grabbed the paper.
Her hands trembled as she read his words.
There, beneath her dramatic declaration, was a short sentence:
“I can see your feet. We’re out of bread. Be back in five minutes.”
For several seconds, Margaret simply stared at the note.
Then she looked down at her feet.
She suddenly remembered how much of her body had been sticking out from beneath the bed.
Daniel had known she was there the entire time.
He had seen through her little experiment immediately.
And rather than confronting her, he had decided to play along.
The mysterious phone call, the romantic promises, and the cheerful announcement that she was finally gone had all been part of his joke.
He had not been celebrating her departure.
He had been teasing his wife.
