The Reaction She Never Expected
Margaret held her breath.
She heard Daniel placing his keys on the kitchen counter. He walked around the house, apparently unaware that anything unusual had happened.
Then his footsteps approached the bedroom.
The door opened.
Margaret watched from beneath the bed as he entered.
He seemed relaxed, almost cheerful. He walked toward the dresser, noticed the note, and picked it up.
This was the moment she had been waiting for.
She expected him to read the message twice, perhaps call her name, or rush through the house searching for her.
Instead, Daniel simply stood there.
He read the note carefully.
Then he placed it on the dresser, picked up a pen, and began writing something.
Margaret could not see what he was adding.
Her curiosity grew.
Why wasn’t he worried?
Why wasn’t he calling her?
What could possibly be so important that he was writing a response instead of looking for his wife?
A few seconds later, Daniel reached for his phone.
Margaret listened closely.
“She’s finally gone,” he said.
Her heart seemed to stop.
He paused, apparently listening to the person on the other end.
“Yes, I know. It’s about time.”
Margaret’s eyes widened.
She pressed one hand against her mouth to keep herself from making a sound.
Daniel continued speaking.
“I’m on my way to see you. Put on that beautiful French nightgown. I love you. I can’t wait to be with you.”
He laughed softly.
“We’ll have the whole evening together. Just the way you like it.”
Then he ended the call.
