A Lesson in Marriage — With a Twist
Margaret could hardly decide whether to laugh or feel embarrassed.
She had spent the afternoon planning an elaborate test of her husband’s affection, only to discover that he had recognized the trick before she had even finished hiding.
The funniest part was that Daniel had apparently been aware of her presence throughout the entire performance.
She imagined him standing beside the dresser, reading her note while trying not to smile.
Perhaps he had noticed her feet immediately.
Perhaps he had heard her shifting beneath the bed.
Either way, he had turned the situation around with a single sentence.
When Daniel returned a few minutes later, Margaret was waiting in the bedroom.
She held up the note.
“Really? You knew I was under there the whole time?”
Daniel smiled.
“Well, I did notice something unusual sticking out from beneath the bed.”
Margaret tried to look annoyed, but the expression did not last.
“And that phone call?”
“Just a little performance,” he admitted. “I thought you might appreciate a dramatic ending.”
She shook her head, finally laughing.
The two of them had managed to turn a small disagreement into an even bigger misunderstanding, all because Margaret wanted to test her husband’s reaction and Daniel decided to turn the test into a joke.
Perhaps the evening had not gone according to her plan.
But one thing was certain: Daniel had noticed her, understood exactly what she was doing, and found a way to make sure she would never forget it.
And next time Margaret wanted to know what her husband was thinking, she might simply ask him.
After all, hiding under the bed was clearly not the best way to get an honest answer — especially when your feet are giving away the entire secret.
