I Always Take Eggs Randomly—So They Never Know Who’s Next

Should You Wash Your Eggs?

This is another common question.

For commercially packaged eggs, USDA advises consumers not to wash them at home. Commercial eggs are already processed according to applicable requirements, and washing them again at home can potentially increase contamination risk by allowing water to move through shell pores.

So the better strategy isn’t:

“Wash them so they know who’s boss.”

It’s:

“Keep them refrigerated and handle them properly.” 😄

How Long Do Eggs Actually Last?

If you’re wondering how long that carton can stay in the refrigerator, the general USDA recommendation for raw eggs in the shell is 3–5 weeks under proper refrigeration.

Hard-cooked eggs are different. They should generally be used within one week when refrigerated.

Once eggs are cracked and separated, their storage time is shorter. USDA lists raw egg whites and yolks at about 2–4 days in the refrigerator.

These are useful guidelines, but always pay attention to the condition of the eggs and the storage instructions on the package.
