The Psychology of the Egg Carton
If we continue the joke, every egg has a different personality.
The confident egg
“It’s definitely not going to be me.”
Five seconds later:
Gone.
The nervous egg
“Why is that hand coming this way?”
Gone.
The egg in the corner
“I’ve survived this long. I’m safe.”
The person needs exactly one egg.
Guess which one they grab.
The oldest egg
“Please. I’ve seen things.”
😂
The egg that nobody chooses
It just sits there watching everyone else disappear.
Eventually, it’s the final egg in the carton.
“I have outlived them all.”
The Surprisingly Serious Side of Egg Storage
Behind the joke is an everyday food-safety topic worth knowing.
Eggs can carry harmful bacteria such as Salmonella, even when their shells appear clean and uncracked. Proper refrigeration, handling, and cooking are therefore important.
For refrigerated raw shell eggs, USDA guidance gives a storage period of approximately 3 to 5 weeks.
Eggs should also be kept in their original carton and stored in the colder part of the refrigerator rather than the refrigerator door, according to USDA guidance.
So while random selection won’t make eggs fresher, proper refrigeration definitely matters.
