The restaurant was almost empty when the manager noticed that one of his waitresses had stopped moving.
She was sitting near the counter, her head resting against her folded arms. Her eyes were closed, and beside her lay a small notebook filled with handwritten notes. She had fallen asleep.
Her name was Amira. She was 26 years old, and for months, she had been working longer hours than anyone else in the restaurant. Every morning, she attended classes, and every evening, she put on her uniform and served customers until late at night.
She rarely complained. She rarely asked for help. And whenever someone asked whether she was doing all right, she simply smiled and answered, “I’m fine.”
But she wasn’t fine.
Behind that smile was a young woman carrying responsibilities that few people knew about.
A Life Built Around Sacrifice
Amira had moved to the city several years earlier, hoping to build a better future. Her dream was to finish her studies and eventually open a small business of her own.
However, life had other plans.
Her father had passed away, and her mother was struggling with everyday expenses. Amira had become the family’s main source of support. Every month, she sent part of her salary home, carefully calculating what she could afford to keep for herself.
Some nights, she skipped dinner to save money. Other nights, she studied until two in the morning before getting only a few hours of sleep.
Her colleagues admired her dedication, but they could also see that she was becoming exhausted.
“Amira, you need to rest,” one of them told her.
She laughed softly.
“Maybe one day. Right now, I have too many things to do.”
