Emily grabbed my hand.
“Will they survive, Doctor?”
Dr. Harris took a deep breath.
“First, we need to double-check something. And it involves not only the children’s father but both of you as well.”
My entire world seemed to spin.
What could we possibly have in common that we didn’t already know?
And why had he suddenly asked whether we knew our biological parents?
Emily was trembling beside me, both hands resting protectively on her belly.
“Please tell us the truth,” she whispered. “Is something wrong with our babies?”
“The initial tests haven’t revealed any serious illness,” Dr. Harris explained. “But we’ve discovered something unusual in your genetic results.”
He looked directly at me.
“Sarah, your mother died when you were six, correct?”
I nodded.
“And Emily, you were adopted?”
“Yes,” she answered nervously. “Why?”
“Certain genetic markers suggest you may be closely related. We need additional testing to confirm that.”
