Does Everybody Clean and Wash Their Crockpot After Every Use?

Let’s talk about something that happens in almost every kitchen.

You make a delicious meal in your slow cooker.

Maybe it’s chili.

Maybe it’s pulled pork.

Maybe it’s stew, soup, or a big batch of shredded chicken.

Everyone eats.

The crockpot sits on the counter.

And then comes the question:

Do you wash it immediately, or do you let it sit until later? 😂

And here’s another question that seems to divide households:

Does everybody actually wash their crockpot after every use?

The answer is probably obvious to some people.

Of course!

But others might be thinking:

“Wait… people don’t always wash it right away?” 😂

🧼 Yes, You Should Clean It After Every Use

If you’re wondering what the normal food-safety approach is, the slow cooker should be cleaned after each use.

Food residue left sitting in the crock can become a great environment for bacteria to multiply.

And the longer food sits at room temperature, the more important proper cleaning becomes.

Even if the crock looks clean, there can still be a layer of grease, sauce, or food residue left behind.

🥘 But What About the Crockpot Insert?

Most modern slow cookers have a removable ceramic or stoneware insert.

That’s the part that actually holds the food.

After cooking, allow it to cool appropriately, then wash the insert according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Many removable inserts are dishwasher-safe, but always check the instructions for your particular model.

🧽 Don’t Forget the Lid!

The lid needs cleaning too.

Steam from cooking can condense on the underside and mix with food particles, sauces, and grease.

Wash it thoroughly after each use.

If your lid has a removable gasket or other pieces, check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and clean those components as well.

⚡ What About the Heating Base?

Here’s the part people sometimes forget.

Do not put the electrical heating base in the sink or dishwasher unless the manufacturer specifically says it is designed for that.

Instead:

  1. Unplug the slow cooker.
  2. Allow it to cool.
  3. Wipe the outside and inside of the heating base with a damp cloth.
  4. Dry it thoroughly.

If food has splashed onto the base, clean it promptly.
