For several minutes, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, “I didn’t know he forged your signature.”
I studied her.
“You knew the RV belonged to me.”
She nodded.
“And you knew he was selling it.”
“Yes.”
“Then you knew enough.”
She lowered her head.
“I thought you’d agreed.”
I didn’t believe her completely.
But I listened.
Britney explained that Jason had told her I no longer wanted the RV.
He claimed I had decided against traveling and offered to help pay for her surgery.
“Why didn’t you ask me?” I said.
She began crying.
“Because I didn’t want to hear you say no.”
That answer told me more than any excuse could have.
She had wanted something badly enough to avoid asking the person who would have to sacrifice it.
I pushed a tissue box toward her.
“Britney, you’re entitled to make decisions about your own body. But you aren’t entitled to pay for those decisions with someone else’s property.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
Then she said something unexpected.
“I canceled the procedure.”
I looked up.
“The clinic is returning most of the deposit. I’m going to use my savings to repay what I can.”
It wasn’t enough to repair everything.
But it was the first sign that someone understood the seriousness of what had happened.
The Dealership Made an Unexpected Offer
A week later, Daniel called.
“Mr. Dawson, we’ve completed our internal review.”
I held my breath.
“The attempted sale has been voided. We have not transferred the vehicle to the buyer.”
I closed my eyes.
“So the RV is still mine?”
“Yes, sir. The title remains in your name.”
I leaned against the kitchen counter.
For the first time in days, I could breathe normally.
Daniel continued.
“We also spoke with the buyer. He was understandably disappointed, but he accepted that the transaction couldn’t proceed.”
“I’m sorry he got dragged into this.”
“That’s kind of you to say.”
Then Daniel paused.
“There’s something else.”
I almost laughed.
After everything that had happened, those words made me nervous.
“What now?”
“Our service manager looked over your restoration records.”
“All right.”
“He says you’ve done remarkable work on that motor home.”
I smiled despite myself.
“She’s an old girl, but she still has plenty of miles left.”
Daniel chuckled.
“Well, we’d like to help make sure she gets those miles.”
The dealership offered to perform a full pre-trip inspection at no charge.
They would check the brakes, tires, electrical system, generator, and other essential components.
They also offered to repair a minor electrical problem Walter had discovered.
I tried to refuse.
Daniel wouldn’t hear it.
“Mr. Dawson, you’ve been through enough. Let us do something decent.”
I looked at Emily’s photograph.
And I accepted.
What Happened to Jason
The legal process took several months.
Investigators reviewed the documents and financial records.
Jason eventually admitted that he’d signed my name without permission.
His attorney helped him negotiate a resolution that included repayment obligations and legal consequences.
I won’t pretend that watching my son face the results of his choices was easy.
It was one of the hardest experiences of my life.
But I had spent too many years teaching Jason that actions mattered to abandon that principle when it became uncomfortable.
He began making payments toward the financial losses and expenses connected to the attempted sale.
Britney returned to work and contributed as well.
Their marriage became strained.
For a while, Jason blamed everyone except himself.
Then one afternoon, nearly six months later, he came to my house alone.
He stood on the porch holding a small cardboard box.
“What’s that?” I asked.
He looked down.
“Mom’s things.”
Inside were several photographs, a handwritten recipe card, and a little brass compass Emily had given him when he was sixteen.
“I found these while cleaning out the garage.”
I took the compass.
Emily had engraved a message on the back.
Always find your way home.
Jason’s voice cracked.
“Dad, I think I lost my way.”
I looked at him.
